All of the five puppies were born healthy and weighed 9.6-11.8 ounces. Caper is a good mommy, feeding them well and keeping them clean. Puppies are weighed daily and all are gaining nicely. They are all on track to double their weight by ten days. Puppies are born blind and deaf. Their eyes and ears usually open around two weeks of age.
Since the puppies were born December 23rd, on a snowy frigid day we decided to use a snow theme for their temporary names. We have three boy snowmen: Bumble (green collar, brown and white), Olaf (red collar, black and white), and Frosty (black collar, black and white). We have two girls: Powder (blue collar, black and white), and Flurry (yellow collar, brown and white).
On day three we started ENS (early neurological stimumation) and ESI (early scent introduction). ENS is a series of five procedures that add gentle stress for short periods of time. ENS improves stress responces later in life. These exercises are performed once a day from day three to day sixteen. Early scent introduction is also performed at this time. Each puppy is introduced to a novel scent for a few seconds. If the puppy moves toward the scent the time is extended. ESI improves dogs scenting ability later in life.
